Sony released the PS5 Slim redesign in late 2023 and it has become the standard PS5 model available in Kenya. Smaller, lighter, and marginally cheaper — but is it the right buy?
What Changed from Original PS5
- Size: 30% smaller volume than the original
- Weight: 3.2kg vs 4.5kg for the original disc edition
- Detachable disc drive on the disc edition
- USB-C on the front panel alongside USB-A
- Performance: identical to the original — same CPU, GPU, SSD
Should First-Time Buyers Get the Slim?
Yes. If you do not own a PS5 yet, the Slim at KSh 65,999 from GameStop Kenya is the right choice. The smaller form factor fits more Kenyan living situations and the price is slightly lower than launch pricing for the original.
Should Existing PS5 Owners Upgrade?
No. The performance is identical. You would essentially be paying to have a smaller and lighter console. The only reason to upgrade is if your original PS5 develops a hardware fault — in which case the Slim is a natural replacement.
Disc vs Digital Edition
In Kenya, the disc edition is strongly recommended. Physical game resale and pre-owned purchases are important ways Kenyan gamers manage gaming costs. The digital edition saves KSh 4,000 but locks you out of physical game trades entirely.
