Baldur's Gate 3 Review: The Greatest RPG Ever Made?

Baldur's Gate 3 is the game that made the entire industry sit up and reassess what role-playing games can be. On PS5, it runs beautifully and is fully accessible to players who have never touched a D&D rulebook in their lives.

Scale and Freedom

The sheer volume of choice in BG3 is unprecedented. Nearly every dialogue option has mechanical implications. Companion characters react to your decisions with genuine personality rather than generic approval meters. In Act 2 alone there are consequences to choices made in Act 1 that take hours to surface.

Combat Depth

Turn-based tactical combat built on D&D 5e rules sounds complex — it is, initially. But the tutorial is comprehensive, tooltips are thorough, and the underlying logic is consistent enough that new players develop intuition fairly quickly. Environmental interactions — using barrels of oil as weapons, shoving enemies off ledges, casting water on enemies before hitting them with lightning — make every encounter feel creative.

Co-op

Up to 4-player co-op is fully supported. Running BG3 with friends over PSN is one of the most memorable gaming experiences in this generation — choices split the group, arguments about what to do are genuine, and the shared narrative surprises everyone differently.

PS5 Version

Larian delivered an excellent console port. The interface works with controller, load times are minimal, and the game runs at a stable 60fps in performance mode.
