How to Care for Gaming Equipment in Nairobi's Climate

Nairobi's climate presents specific challenges for gaming equipment. Dust accumulates faster than in most cities, occasional humidity spikes affect electronics, and inconsistent power is a constant risk. This guide helps you protect your setup.
Dust Management
Dust is the number one killer of gaming hardware in Nairobi. Fans pull in air and, over time, dust builds on heatsinks, GPU fins, and vents — causing overheating. Every 3–6 months, use compressed air (available at computer shops in Nairobi) to blow dust out of your console vents. Never use a regular vacuum — static discharge can damage components.
Power Protection
Nairobi experiences voltage spikes and blackouts regularly. A Surge Protector Strip is the minimum protection — cost KSh 1,500–3,000. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is better — it provides clean power and 20–30 minutes of battery backup during cuts. For a PS5 or gaming PC, invest in a 1000VA UPS (KSh 5,000–10,000).
Controller Care
Joystick drift — where the thumbstick registers movement without input — is accelerated by dust entering the mechanism. Keep controllers in their cases when not in use. Clean around the joystick base with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol every few months.
Disc Care
Keep game discs in their cases. Fingerprints and scratches reduce read reliability. Clean discs from the centre outward — never in circular motions — with a soft cloth.
